Amazing Grass Review – Raw Vegan Drink Powders, Green Drinks, Raw Food Powders

If you are looking for some new vegan protein/healthy/energy drink powders and bars that are high in quality (and offer products specifically for kids too), but lower on the price scale (some of the natural drink powders out there are mad expensive), then you should check out some of the Amazing Grass products. They are Vegan and Soy-Free too! They have a good a range of flavours, so you should be able to find something that will suit your tastes. I initially discovered this brand just a little over a year ago while I was doing some research on more affordable (vegan) drink powders (not just specifically protein powders). I came across their Green Superfood Chocolate Drink Powder and got their smaller sized container so I could try it out and I was, and still am, very happy with their taste and quality. They also have their powders in little packets, which are easier to take with you on the go and are very travel-friendly (That’s how I’ve been carrying them through my summer travels).

I haven’t tried all of their products yet, so I will just comment on what I have tried. I can’t see really disliking any of their products, since many of their products contain similar ingredients. I suggest buying a sample packet of some different varieties to see what you like before buying one of their larger containers.

What is especially interesting and awesome about Amazing Grass drink powders are their ingredients. The Original Green Superfood powder has (all organic) Wheat Grass, Barley Grass, Alfalfa, Spirulina, Spinach, Chlorella, Broccoli, Acai, Maca, Carrot, Beet, Raspberry, Rose Hips, Pineapple, Green Tea, Acerola Cherry, Flax Seed Poder, Apple Pectin Fiber….and a few more ingredients after that!

If you are unsure of the uses and benefits of certain ingredients, they have an ingredient chart on their website which explains the benefits. Some of the ingredients included are Chia seeds, Kale, Dulse, Alfalfa, Wheat Grass, Spirulina, Ginger and Burdock Root.

Chocolate, Berry, Lemon Lime, Original

I visited with my aunt a couple of weeks ago after not seeing her for a couple of years and when I got into her car, I noticed she had a ton of Amazing Grass bars (which I didn’t even know existed until recently!) and she said she’s been a huge fan of Amazing Grass for a while and eats one of their bars nearly every day. Right on. 🙂

As I mentioned above, I only recently found out that Amazing Grass makes Energy Bars. These taste quite different than any store bought bar I’ve tasted before. They actually remind me of an experimental protein bar that I made last year.

They are very “earthy” and homemade tasting. They don’t taste processed or filled with funky ingredients at all. And that makes sense, since they are not! 🙂 They are soft and dense and not at all crunchy, so don’t expect them to be like a puffed rice crisp kind of bar. They seem to be quite filling too. I haven’t tried the Chocolate kind, as I have been saving it, so I am looking forward to trying that one out. I believe I have seen these at Noah’s Natural Foods in Toronto and I saw them at Whole Foods and Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco yesterday.

I do like these bars, however I think it is taking me a while to get used to the really natural kind of tastes again, since I have been eating luna and clif bars after my yoga classes, which have such a different kind of taste to them. The Amazing Grass bars seem like a better choice though. They are high in Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, Vitamin K and even have Vitamin B12, which is great since vegans can have trouble finding enough sources of B12 if they aren’t taking a daily supplement.

They currently have four flavors: Original, Berry, Peanut Butter Chocolate and Chocolate.

Nutritional profile of the Original Green Superfood Bar:

Buy the bars on – They may seem pricey, but I think they are generally that price where ever you find Amazing Grass products. Might be better off finding single ones that you can purchase but it would be cheaper in the long run to by them by the box. All their ingredients are organic, so that alone will cause the price to increase. If you are eating one as a meal, though, it isn’t too bad.

Amazing Grass Wheat Grass vs. other Wheat Grass Products

Kidz SuperFood:

These aren’t just for kids, but they are a great choice as one glass of Kidz Superfood contains three servings of fruit and vegetables, so this would be great for kids who have trouble getting enough veggies or who just don’t enjoy eating fruits and veggies. Hopefully they will someday though, since they will be totally missin’ out. You can get them in a container or buy them in single packets. I haven’t tried the Kidz Superfoods packets, but they must be similar to the regular Amazing Grass drink powders.

Oh, they actually have a chart comparing the Kidz drink powers with the regular ones. Sweet. :

The Amazing Grass Chocolate Drink powder is still my favourite Amazing Grass product (so far). It is great to put into smoothies, desserts, protein bars and I think I might have even put it in some homemade chocolate tapioca pudding once. You should keep it stored in the fridge once it is opened, in order to keep it fresh. If you buy one of the containers (as opposed to just the single packets, it comes with a little scoop. The smallest container has 30 servings.

Almost all out 🙁

Where to Find Amazing Grass Products:

Blender Bottling it up with Amazing Grass powers

Sorry that I don’t have a more interesting Blender Bottle photo. I have packed mine away in my suitcase, since I’m getting ready to head back to Canada. I’m sure most people have heard of Blender Bottles, but in case you haven’t, it’s basically a plastic bottle which comes with a spiral metal ball which substitutes the need for a blender (within reason.. it won’t chop up your dates (dang, even my old blender can barely do that :P)… it is best used when you are only having to mix a liquid like water or juice with protein/drink powers). It does quite a good job at breaking up the bumps as it good if you are on the go. You just shakkkkkkkkkke it well and off you go!

It costs about $8 on, but you may want to wait till they have it on sale. I think they even give it away for free sometimes when you purchase a certain protein powder or from a certain brand. You can try asking them if they plan to have a sale via their facebook page. I believe I got mine either for free or for $2-$3. Most times I just use it without the ball. It has a good seal on it and the the lid snaps tightly shut. There have been a couple of times where I have forgotten to close it and it pours all over my bag, so don’t let that happen. It’s messy…and wet.

They have a Vanilla Chai flavour! Mmm :o)

Looking for some other Protein Powders? I did a post in January which talks about all of the protein powders that are in my fridge. I have mentioned Amazing Grass in there, since it is so awesome 🙂 It is in the low-mid price range, depending on what size you get.
